How to Service Your Tankless Water Heater & Change the Water Filter

Regular maintenance of any home appliance extends the life span of the unit. A tankless water heater that is not serviced will start to see problems within the first 2-3 years of installation. A tankless water heater can last up to 20 years, if not longer if serviced annually. You can service the water heater and change the water filter yourself following these steps. To service your tankless water heater, you will need the following items:

2 Gallons of White Distilled Vinegar
Small water pool pump with a regular hose thread connection
One 5 gallon bucket
2 standard 60 inch water hoses
Channel lock wrench (adjustable wrench)

Some people ask, why white vinegar? White vinegar has a naturally high acidity level that helps loosen mineral deposits. Calcium, lime, and rust build up over time in the water heater, and the white vinegar helps remove the build up.

Next, follow these 7 easy steps:

Step One: Unplug your tankless water heater

Step Two: Shut of water on both ingoing and outgoing sides of the heater

Step Three: A properly installed tankless water heater will have the service hose hook ups facing outward. Remove drain caps and attach both hoses to the service ports.

Step Four: Attach the cold-water side to the pool pump, and attach the hot water side to the other hose. Put both the pool pump and the hot water hose into the 5-gallon bucket

Step Five: Add 2 gallons of white distilled vinegar into the bucket

Step Six: Open the 2 valves of the drain side and plug in the pool pump

Step Seven: Turn the pump on and let the pump run filtering the vinegar through the system for 30 minutes

After 30 minutes is up, now it is time to detach the hoses and pump and set up the tankless water heater; this is done by unplugging the pool pump, turning off the drain valves, detaching the hoses and replacing the drain caps. Turn the water back on for the water heater and go anywhere in your house; turn on the hot water and let the water run for at least 5 minutes to flush the vinegar from the system. The final step is to plug the tankless water heater back in. You have just serviced your water heater!

Finally, how to change the water filter, below is a list of the supplies you will need:

2 large buckets. 5 gallon buckets will be perfect
Wrench that came with the water filter system
New filter
Step ladder if needed

Next, follow these 7 easy steps:

Step One: Shut off main water supply

Step Two: Go any where in the house and turn on the water to drain excess water from pipes

Step Three: Using the provided wrench tool with your filter kit, loosen filter enough to be removed by hand. While you are removing the filter hold one bucket under the filter to catch any remaining water. If you cannot do both at the same time, make sure a second person is on hand to hold the bucket for you. Once filter is loose, use your hand to loosen the rest of the way and remove water filter. The water filter once completely loose will fall into the bucket.

Step Four: Use second bucket to place underneath opening to catch any water that remained in the pipes while installing the new filter

Step Five: Remove old filter and keep the “O” ring to be replaced. Put in new filter and replace “O” ring back into filter casing.

Step Six: Hand tighten the water filter until snug than use the wrench that was supplied with water filter kit and give ¼ turn to secure filter into place.

Step Seven: Turn water on slowly to ensure the water filter is tight. If any water leaks, just give the filter a little extra turn. Do not over tighten the filter.

Congratulations! You have just serviced your tankless hot water heater and changed the filter.
